MDF vs plywood: which board goes where, and what each costs in Bengaluru.
Plywood is stronger, holds a screw better and, in BWP grade, survives water; MDF is smoother and takes paint better. Use plywood for kitchen and wardrobe boxes and for anything near water, in BWP grade wherever water reaches. Use MDF for painted, PU, membrane or routed shutters and for dry furniture. HDHMR sits between the two: denser than MDF and when built with every face and edge sealed, practically as good as BWP at about half the cost.
Difference between MDF and plywood, at a glance
MDF vs plywood price in Bengaluru
MDF is cheaper than branded plywood of a comparable grade, but unbranded commercial plywood can cost less than branded MDF. So compare the brand and the grade before the board name.
Typical Bengaluru rates per 8x4 sheet, 18 mm, mid-2026.
Plywood is graded by how much water its glue can take. MR, moisture resistant, is for dry rooms. BWR, boiling water resistant, copes with humidity and the odd splash. BWP, boiling water proof, is made with glue that survives water outright, and marine plywood is BWP made to IS 710. In a Bengaluru kitchen, BWP goes wherever water reaches.
Check the stamp on several sheets in the stack. A genuine sheet carries the brand, the grade, the thickness and the standard: IS 303 covers general-purpose plywood in MR, BWR and BWP grades, and IS 710 covers marine plywood. The brands that make each grade are in best plywood brands in India. A grade written in marker is a warning. On the invoice, ask for the exact grade, the BIS licence (CML) number and the emission class, where E1 is stricter than E2. MDF and HDHMR carry the brand and grade too, and moisture-resistant MDF is usually tinted green through its core.
Which is better, MDF or plywood? Use by use
Part by part, for a flat in Bengaluru.

Five disadvantages of MDF matter in a Bengaluru flat.
- It swells with water. A cut edge, a screw hole or a chipped band lets water in, the board puffs up, and it never goes back.
- Screws pull out of its edge. A hinge or a drawer runner fixed into an MDF edge loosens sooner, and a stripped hole needs a dowel or a new fitting to repair.
- It is heavy. A tall MDF wardrobe or a loft built from it loads the wall and the hinges more than plywood does.
- It sags. On a long shelf under weight, MDF bends slowly and stays bent.
- It makes dust and needs sealing. Cutting it fills the site with fine dust, and every cut edge has to be banded or sealed before it goes in.
Branded plywood costs more than branded MDF of a comparable grade, and its edges need banding. Its grade is also easy to fake: MR plywood sold as BWR or BWP is a common trick, because the two look the same until water gets in.
Which lasts longer, plywood or MDF?
In a Bengaluru kitchen or bathroom, BWP plywood lasts longer, because it holds together when water gets in and MDF swells. HDHMR built with every face and edge sealed comes practically as close. In dry, painted furniture such as a bedroom shutter or a TV panel, MDF lasts as long as you need it to, provided every edge is sealed.
Past the board name, grade and edge banding decide a cabinet's life. MR plywood with a hand-glued band under the sink can fail sooner than HDHMR with a machine-pressed band in a dry wall unit. With two monsoons a year, even a bedroom sees damp, so seal every edge.
HDHMR, particle board and blockboard: where they fit
Before you sign off the material list
- Brand, grade, IS number and CML number on the quotation. "Plywood" alone, or "BWR/BWP" with a slash, lets anything arrive.
- Thickness. 18 mm for the carcass and shutters, and a 6 mm or 12 mm back as the drawing says. Measure a sheet on delivery.
- Edge banding pressed by machine. On every cut edge, including the ones nobody sees. Hand-glued tape lifts first.
- BWP in the wet zone, on the drawing. Write the grade against each box, so the sink unit can't quietly become MR.
- Spotting MR sold as BWR or BWP. Check the stamp on several sheets, and look at a cut edge for gaps between the layers or overlapping veneers. If you're still unsure, boil an offcut in water: MR glue lets go and the layers open up, while BWP holds together.
Where we sit
Every board and grade in your home is named on our drawings and product list, box by box, and the contractor quotes on that list. You buy each item at the vendor's price, with no margin or commission to us. In our kitchens that means BWP plywood or properly sealed HDHMR wherever water reaches, and HDHMR for the dry runs and wall units. Our fee is ₹100 per sq ft of carpet area, set out on our pricing page, and our kitchen interior design page shows how the box, the shutters and the countertop are chosen.
Have you seen it across the whole kitchen?
You never see the board again once the shutters go on. The finish on top you see every day, and it usually gets chosen off a chip the size of a business card. Then ten feet of it arrives, and a repeat you never noticed on the chip becomes a pattern across every shutter.
That is what we fix. Every finish we design is a real product with a brand and a code, and we build your whole home at full size. You stand inside it at our Whitefield studio and see the kitchen in that finish, next to your wall colour, before anything is ordered. If the grain repeats, you swap it in a minute.
Free, 45 minutes, online on Google Meet or at the studio. Bring your contractor's quote and we'll go through the boards and grades on it with you.
Questions people ask
Is MDF the same as plywood?
No. MDF is made from wood fibres pressed with resin into one even board, with no grain and no layers. Plywood is made from thin sheets of real wood glued in cross layers. Plywood is stronger, holds a screw better and, in BWP grade, survives water. MDF is smoother, so it takes paint and PU better and can be routed into shaker or grooved shutters. Both get sold as engineered wood.
Is MDF stronger than plywood?
No. Plywood is stronger and holds a screw better, most of all at the edge. MDF is heavier for the same thickness, but it sags over a long shelf and crumbles where a screw goes into its edge. HDHMR, a denser pressed board, closes some of the gap.
Which is better for shelves, MDF or plywood?
Plywood or HDHMR. MDF sags over a long span under books or crockery, and once it bends it stays bent. Plywood stays straight and holds the screws of a bracket or the pins of an adjustable shelf. If a shelf has to be MDF, keep it short or support it in the middle.
Is MDF cheaper than plywood?
Not always. Branded MDF costs less than branded plywood of a comparable grade, but unbranded commercial plywood can cost less than branded MDF. Compare quotes board by board, with the brand, grade and thickness written against each, before you compare totals.
MDF or plywood for kitchen cabinets?
Plywood or HDHMR for the cabinet boxes, never plain MDF. Wherever water reaches (the sink unit, the dishwasher box and the run beside them) use BWP plywood, or HDHMR built properly, with every face and cut edge sealed and the edge bands pressed by machine: it gives practically the same benefits as BWP at about half the cost. For the dry runs and wall units, HDHMR or BWR plywood does the job. MDF belongs on the shutters if they are PU, membrane or routed, where its smooth face takes the finish.
Which one lasts longer, plywood or MDF?
In a Bengaluru kitchen or bathroom, BWP plywood, because it holds together when water gets in and MDF swells. In dry, painted furniture, MDF lasts well if every edge is sealed. Beyond the board name, the grade and the edge banding decide how long either one lasts, so ask for both in writing.
