The best plywood brands in India, and which grade to ask for

The brand matters less than the grade and where the sheet goes. In Bengaluru, start with CenturyPly, Greenply or Action TESA. Use BWP or marine plywood for the kitchen wet zone, and BWR or MR everywhere else. Then write the brand, the line, the grade, the IS stamp and the CML number into the quotation, so the sheets that arrive are the sheets you paid for.

01 · The top three

Top 3 plywood brands in India: CenturyPly, Greenply and Action TESA

These are the three we'd start with for a kitchen and wardrobes in Bengaluru. All three have authorised dealers across the city, so the sheets are easy to get and easy to check.

CenturyPlyCentury Plyboards is one of the largest plywood makers in India, and often the first name on a carpenter's quote. It sells plywood in every grade, from MR for wardrobes to BWP and marine for the kitchen, and also makes laminates, MDF and HDHMR-type boards. Its main plywood lines: Sainik MR for dry rooms, Sainik 710 in BWP for the kitchen, Club Prime (BWP, fire-retardant) and Architect at the top, and Bond 710 for marine. The brand alone tells you little, because the same company sells an MR sheet and a marine sheet, so the line and the grade are what to write down.
GreenplyGreenply Industries is the other big plywood name, with a full range from MR to BWP and marine and a large dealer network. Its MDF business was split off in 2019 as Greenpanel, so the two are separate companies now, even though the names sound alike. Its main plywood lines: Ecotec and MR 303 for dry rooms, Green Gold in BWP, and Green Club 500 and 700 at the top. As with CenturyPly, ask which line is on the quote and check the grade printed on it.
Action TESAAction TESA is best known for boards. It sells its HDHMR as India's first, along with particle board and MDF, and many Bengaluru kitchens now use its HDHMR for the boxes. Its range is all boards, with no plywood: HDHMR, MDF, particle board and BOILO, a boiling-water-resistant board. It is on this list because its HDHMR is the board most often quoted in place of plywood for kitchen and wardrobe boxes. If a dealer's quote says "Action TESA board", ask what the board really is.
02 · Other brands

Top 10 plywood brands in India: the rest of the list

Lists of the top 10 plywood brands in India mix national makers with regional ones. Beyond the top three, these are the names you are most likely to see on a Bengaluru quote. Each sells more than one grade, so the same checks apply.

GreenpanelBest known for MDF, since it was split off from Greenply. It also sells plywood.
KitplyOne of the older plywood names in India, still common on carpenters' quotes, with lines such as Vista (MR) and Gold 710 (BWP).
MerinoBest known for laminates, which you may already have on a sample board. It makes plywood too.
DuroplyAn older plywood maker with BWP and marine lines among others.
ArchidplyA value to mid-range name, often quoted for wardrobes and furniture, with lines such as Archid Classic (MR).
AustinA mid-range plywood brand you'll see on some carpenters' quotes.
UniplyA plywood maker with its roots in south India, still seen on quotes here.
03 · Grades

Why the grade matters more than the brand

Plywood is graded by how much water its glue can take. MR, often called commercial plywood, is for dry rooms. BWR copes with humidity and the odd splash. BWP, sold as waterproof plywood, is made for wet zones. IS 303:2024 covers these three, and marine plywood is BWP made to a separate standard, IS 710, with stricter rules on the veneers and the glue. We go into the grades, and why plain MDF loses to plywood in a kitchen, in MDF vs plywood.

Marine plywood vs commercial plywood is the widest gap in the range. Commercial plywood in a sink unit will swell and delaminate once water sits on it. Marine plywood in a wardrobe does no harm, but it often costs twice as much as unbranded commercial or more, for no gain in a dry bedroom. For a flat, good BWP does everything marine does in the kitchen.

Branded plywood costs more because you are paying for a grade you can check, a printed stamp and an invoice the maker stands behind. Unbranded commercial plywood isn't automatically bad. From a known local maker, with the IS mark on it, it does fine in a dry wardrobe or a bed box. The risk is that nobody can tell you the grade for sure, so keep it out of the kitchen and the bathroom.

Gurjan is a hardwood used for the face veneer, and in some sheets the whole core. It is dense and holds a screw well, which is why the best Gurjan plywood is sold as a step up. Gurjan is the timber and says nothing about the glue, so the grade still decides where it can go. Many sheets sold as Gurjan have a Gurjan face over a lighter core, so ask which one is on the quote.

04 · Which grade where

Which plywood for kitchen, wardrobes and furniture

Part by part, for a flat in Bengaluru. Modular kitchen plywood comes in two types: one for the wet run and one for everything else.

Kitchen sink unit and wet runBWP or marine plywood, with every cut edge banded. This covers the sink unit, the dishwasher box and the run beside them. Our kitchen interior design page shows how the boxes, shutters and countertop are chosen together.
Kitchen dry run and wall unitsBWR plywood. It handles the steam from the hob and the humidity of a Bengaluru monsoon.
WardrobesMR or BWR plywood. A bedroom is dry, so the best plywood brand for wardrobes is any of the top three in MR or BWR. On a wall shared with a bathroom, use BWR.
studio master bedroom · the wardrobe carcass open, with its Hettich hardwarestudio master bedroom · the wardrobe carcass open, with its Hettich hardware
Beds, TV units and other furnitureMR or BWR plywood. These carry weight but stay dry, so pick on the brand and the finish you want.
Bathroom vanityBWP or marine plywood. A vanity takes splashes every day and stands close to a wet floor, so its bottom edges matter most.
HDHMR insteadHDHMR suits most of these parts as well as plywood, and sealed properly it can take the wet run at about half the cost of BWP. We compare them in HDHMR vs plywood.
05 · Price

Plywood price in Bangalore, by grade

By grade: 18 mm, per 8 x 4 ft sheet, material only
Commercial or MR plywood, unbranded₹1,600 to 2,500
Commercial or MR plywood, branded₹2,900 to 4,000
BWR plywood₹2,500 to 4,500
BWP or marine plywood₹4,000 to 6,500
HDHMR (for reference)₹2,910 to 3,500

The board is only part of a kitchen's bill. Hardware, shutters, the countertop and labour make up the rest, and a good hinge matters as much as the box it hangs on, which we cover in Hettich vs Hafele vs Blum. If the budget is tight, putting BWP only where water reaches and BWR or MR elsewhere is one of the easier savings. We list the others in budget interior design in Bangalore.

06 · Checks on site

How to check the plywood that arrives on site

Fake and relabelled sheets of the big brands do turn up. These checks take ten minutes on delivery day.

Brand on every sheetThe brand and line are printed on each sheet, so look through the stack, including the sheets in the middle.
IS mark and CML numberThe ISI mark with IS 303 (or IS 710 for marine) and a CML number. You can look up the CML number on the BIS Care app or the BIS website to see whose licence it is.
GradeMR, BWR, BWP or marine, printed on the sheet and matching the quotation for that part of the home.
ThicknessMeasure a few sheets with a tape or a vernier. An 18 mm sheet that measures 16 mm is a cheaper sheet.
Emission classE1 or E0, which tells you how much formaldehyde the glue gives off. E0 gives off less, which matters most in bedrooms.
Invoice and dealerBuy from the brand's authorised dealer, and get an invoice naming the brand, line, grade, thickness and quantity. The maker's warranty depends on it.

FAQs

Questions people ask

Which is the best plywood brand in India?

No single brand is best for everything. CenturyPly, Greenply and Action TESA are the three we'd start with in Bengaluru: CenturyPly and Greenply for plywood across the grades, and Action TESA for HDHMR, the board most often quoted in place of plywood. Within any brand, the grade decides how the plywood copes with water: BWP or marine for the kitchen wet zone, BWR or MR for the dry rooms.

Which is better, CenturyPly or Greenply?

At the same grade, there is little to choose between them. Both make MR, BWP and marine plywood, both have dealers across Bengaluru, and both print the grade and the IS mark on every sheet. Compare the line, the grade and the warranty on the quote, then the price.

What are the top 5 plywood brands in India?

CenturyPly, Greenply and Action TESA first, then Greenpanel and Kitply, which you will see often on Bengaluru quotes. Merino and Duroply turn up too. From any of them, pick a line in the right grade, with the IS mark and CML number printed on the sheet.

Which plywood is best for a kitchen?

BWP or marine plywood for the sink unit and the run beside it, and BWR for the dry runs and wall units. HDHMR works in both places as well, provided every face and cut edge is sealed and the edge bands are pressed by machine.

Which plywood is best for wardrobes?

MR or BWR plywood from a known brand. A bedroom is dry, so BWP adds cost without much gain there. On a wall shared with a bathroom, use BWR.

Is marine plywood worth it?

In a flat, it adds little over good BWP. Marine plywood is made to IS 710, with stricter rules on the veneers and the glue, and sells in the same band as BWP, about ₹4,000 to 6,500 for an 18 mm sheet. Use either one in the kitchen wet zone and the bathroom vanity, and don't pay marine rates for wardrobes.

What is Gurjan plywood?

Gurjan is a hardwood used for the face veneer, and sometimes the whole core, of some plywood. It is dense and holds a screw well. Gurjan is the timber and says nothing about the glue, so Gurjan plywood still needs a grade and an IS mark. Some sheets sold as Gurjan have only a Gurjan face over a lighter core, so ask which you are getting.

How do I check if plywood is genuine?

Look for the brand printed on every sheet, the ISI mark with IS 303 or IS 710, and the CML number, which you can look up on the BIS Care app or website. Buy from the brand's authorised dealer, and get an invoice that names the brand, line, grade and thickness.
