HDHMR vs plywood: which is better, and where does each belong?

For most of a Bengaluru home, HDHMR is as good as plywood and usually costs less than BWP plywood. Wardrobes, lofts, shelves, bed and TV units and the kitchen's dry runs all do well in it. In the kitchen wet zone it matches BWP plywood only when every face and cut edge is properly sealed and the edge bands are pressed by machine. If that can't be promised, use BWP there. Whichever you pick, have the board, brand and grade written into the quotation.

01 · What HDHMR is

What is HDHMR, and how is it different from plywood?

HDHMR stands for high density, high moisture resistant board. It is made the way MDF is, from wood fibre pressed with resin, but pressed harder and with a resin that copes better with damp. So it is denser than MDF, holds a screw better and swells less. Carpenters often call it the new material. Action TESA sells its board as India's first HDHMR, and CenturyPly, Greenply, Greenpanel and other board makers now sell similar boards, some under their own names. Most of them make plywood too, so a Century HDHMR board vs Century plywood comes down to the board type and grade, with the brand the same.

Plywood is thin wood veneers glued in cross layers, graded by how much water its glue can take. MR or commercial plywood is for dry rooms, BWR copes with humidity and the odd splash, and BWP is made for wet zones. Marine plywood is BWP made to IS 710. We explain the grades, and why plain MDF loses to both boards in a kitchen, in MDF vs plywood. Plywood vs MDF vs HDHMR, in short: plywood or HDHMR for the boxes, plain MDF only for painted panels in dry rooms.

02 · Head to head

HDHMR vs plywood: which is better, point by point

WaterHDHMR is moisture resistant. Under IS 12406:2025 it may swell no more than 5–8% after a day in water, against up to 12% for MDF. BWP plywood takes water outright, even at an edge left open. Sealed on every face and edge, HDHMR stays sound in a kitchen.
TermitesHDHMR boards come in varities with termite and borer resistance, and good plywood is treated against them. Neither is a guarantee, so ask for termite and borer resistance to be written on the invoice and verify the board carries the mark, more so on a ground floor.
Screw holdingHDHMR holds a screw well: typically 1,250 N on the face and 850 N on the edge, against 700 N on the edge for MDF. Plywood holds a little better at the edge and is more forgiving when a screw has to go in twice. For a door that opens every day, the hinge counts as much as the board, so read Hettich vs Hafele vs Blum as well.
WeightAn 18 mm 8x4 sheet of HDHMR weighs about 44–46 kg, against 27–36 kg for plywood. It matters for a tall loft or a large shutter on hinges, hardly at all for a base unit.
Finish and edgesHDHMR has a smooth, even face with no grain and no gaps in the core, so laminate sits flat and PU, paint and routed shaker shutters come out clean. Plywood takes laminate and veneer well. Both need edge banding. For the finish on top, see laminate vs acrylic vs PU.
Cutting on siteHDHMR cuts to a crisp edge, but it is dense, so cutting is slower and dustier and wears blades faster. Plywood is easier for a carpenter to cut, plane and nail at the site.
RepairsPlywood takes a nail, and a loose screw can usually be refitted a little to one side. In HDHMR a stripped hole needs a dowel or a fresh position, and a chipped edge has to be patched and resealed before water finds it.
03 · Against each grade

HDHMR vs BWR, BWP and marine plywood

BWR vs HDHMRClose in price: HDHMR costs ₹2,910 to 3,500 a sheet and BWR ₹2,500 to 4,500. BWR is lighter and easier to work at the site, and HDHMR has the smoother face and swells little once sealed. For wardrobes, dry kitchen runs and wall units, either is a sound choice, so pick on the finish you want and on how your contractor works.
HDHMR vs BWPBWP plywood copes with water even where an edge has been left open. HDHMR built properly, with every face and cut edge sealed and the edge bands pressed by machine, gives practically the same benefits as BWP at about half the cost. Built carelessly, it swells like any pressed board. So BWP plywood vs HDHMR is really a question about the workshop. If the boxes are made in a factory with machine edge banding, sealed HDHMR is a fair choice for the wet run. If they are cut and banded by hand at the site, BWP is the safer board there.
HDHMR vs marine plyMarine plywood is BWP made to IS 710, with stricter rules on the veneers and the glue. The plywood brands that make it all sell BWP too. It sells in the same band as BWP, ₹4,000 to 6,500 a sheet, and in a flat it adds little over good BWP. Against HDHMR, the answer is the same as for BWP.
04 · Which board where

HDHMR vs plywood for kitchen, wardrobe and the rest of the home

Part by part, for a flat in Bengaluru.

Kitchen sink unit and wet runBWP plywood, or HDHMR with every face and cut edge sealed and the edge bands pressed by machine. This covers the sink unit, the dishwasher box and the run beside them. Our kitchen interior design page shows how the box, the shutters and the countertop are chosen together.
Kitchen dry run and wall unitsHDHMR or BWR plywood. An HDHMR board for a modular kitchen's dry runs is a sensible saving, and its smooth face suits laminate, acrylic or PU shutters.
WardrobesHDHMR, or MR or BWR plywood. A bedroom is dry enough for any of them. On a wall shared with a bathroom, use BWR or sealed HDHMR.

LoftsHDHMR or plywood. Plywood is the lighter of the two, which helps over a tall wardrobe or a long kitchen loft.
ShelvesHDHMR or plywood. Either one carries books or crockery across a normal shelf.
Bed and TV unitHDHMR or plywood for the bed frame and the TV unit's carcass, which take weight. HDHMR also makes a good painted or grooved headboard or TV back panel.
Bathroom vanityBWP plywood, or HDHMR sealed and banded by machine. A vanity takes splashes every day and stands close to a wet floor, so its bottom edges matter most. Hang it on the wall or raise it on legs where you can.
05 · Price

HDHMR vs plywood price in Bengaluru

Sheet for sheet, HDHMR costs about the same as branded commercial plywood and about the same as BWR. It costs more than unbranded plywood and well below BWP and marine.

18 mm, per 8 x 4 ft sheet, material only
HDHMR₹2,910 to 3,500
Plywood, commercial or MR grade₹1,600 to 2,500 unbranded, ₹2,900 to 4,000 branded
Plywood, BWR grade₹2,500 to 4,500
Plywood, BWP or marine grade₹4,000 to 6,500
MDF, plain (for reference)₹2,080 to 2,720
MDF, moisture resistant (for reference)₹2,900 to 3,500

Typical Bengaluru rates, mid-2026. Estimates, not our quotes.

The gap per sheet looks bigger than it is across a whole kitchen, because the board is only part of the bill. Hardware, shutters, the countertop and labour make up the rest. Moving a typical L-shaped kitchen's boxes from BWP to sealed HDHMR saves about ₹50,000. On a tight budget that is one of the easier savings, and we cover the others in budget interior design in Bangalore.

06 · Disadvantages

What are the disadvantages of HDHMR sheets?

HDHMR is a good board. It has five weak points, and each one can be managed.

  • It is heavy. About 44–46 kg a sheet against 27–36 kg for plywood. Fit a third hinge on a tall shutter, and use plywood for a very large loft if the weight worries you.
  • An unsealed edge swells. Water gets in at a raw edge or an open screw hole. Band every cut edge, laminate every exposed face and seal screw holes on the wet side.
  • It is hard on tools. It blunts saw blades and drill bits faster, so some carpenters prefer plywood or charge more for HDHMR. Settle this with your contractor before the quote, or have the boards cut in a factory.
  • It needs good edge banding. Hand-glued tape lifts sooner than a band pressed by machine. Write machine edge banding into the quotation.
  • It is harder to repair. A nail doesn't hold well, and a stripped screw hole needs a dowel. Mark hinge and channel positions on the drawing so each hole is drilled once.
07 · The quotation

What to check on site and write in the quotation

Brand and grade"HDHMR" with the brand next to it. For plywood, the brand, the grade (MR, BWR or BWP) and the IS number. "Plywood/HDHMR" with a slash lets either one arrive.
Thickness18 mm for carcasses and shutters, and the back panel thickness the drawing gives. Measure a sheet on delivery.
Sealed edges and machine bandingWritten into the quotation for every cut edge, including the ones nobody will see.
Which part gets which boardNamed against each box on the drawing, so the sink unit can't quietly change from BWP or sealed HDHMR to something cheaper.
Stamp and invoiceThe brand printed on the sheets in the stack, and an invoice that names the board, the grade and the thickness. Ask for the termite treatment on it too.

FAQs

Questions people ask

Is HDHMR better than plywood?

For most of the home they are equal. HDHMR has the smoother face and swells little once sealed, and plywood is lighter and easier to repair. In the kitchen wet zone, BWP plywood is the safer choice unless the HDHMR has every face and cut edge sealed and its edge bands pressed by machine. Built that way, it gives practically the same benefits as BWP at about half the cost.

What are the disadvantages of HDHMR sheets?

It is heavier than plywood. An unsealed edge swells, it is hard on a carpenter's tools, it needs careful edge banding, preferably by machine, and a stripped screw hole is harder to repair than in plywood. Each is manageable.

Does HDHMR get termites?

HDHMR makers say their boards resist termites and borers, and good plywood is treated against them too. Neither claim is a guarantee, so ask for termite and borer resistance to be written on the invoice, especially in a ground-floor home.

Is the HDHMR sheet waterproof?

No, it is moisture resistant. It swells far less than MDF, no more than 5–8% after a day in water against up to 12% for MDF. With every face and cut edge sealed and the edge bands pressed by machine, it copes with a kitchen sink unit. With a raw edge, it swells and stays swollen.

Which is costly, MDF or HDHMR?

HDHMR. An 18 mm 8x4 sheet of plain MDF costs about ₹2,080 to 2,720 in Bengaluru, and HDHMR ₹2,910 to 3,500. Moisture-resistant MDF costs about the same as HDHMR, at ₹2,900 to 3,500, but HDHMR is denser and holds a screw better at the edge.

Is HDHMR good for a modular kitchen?

Yes, for the boxes. Use HDHMR or BWR plywood for the dry runs and wall units. Under the sink and beside it, use BWP plywood, or HDHMR with every face and cut edge sealed and the edge bands pressed by machine.
