Freelance interior designers in Bangalore: what they charge, and what you get for it.
A freelance interior designer in Bengaluru usually charges for the design alone, and the market range for that is ₹50 to 250 per sq ft. Less experienced freelancers sit at the low end. Some charge 6 to 15% of the project or a flat fee instead. On a 1,000 sq ft flat, ₹50 to 250 per sq ft comes to ₹50,000 to 2.5 lakh, before GST and before the build. A freelancer suits you if you want one person's full attention on your home and can run the site yourself, or already have a contractor you trust.
How much does a freelance interior designer charge?
Freelancers charge in one of five ways. The figures are for the design alone, before GST. The build is separate, and costs ₹800 to 2,500+ per sq ft of carpet area whoever designs it.
| How they charge | Typical range | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Per sq ft | ₹50 to 250 across the market, with less experienced freelancers at the low end. | Which area the rate is on. It should be carpet area, which is usually 70 to 80% of the super built-up figure on your agreement. |
| Per room | ₹5,000 to 50,000 a room depending on freelancer skill, home size and scope of work. | Fine for one or two rooms. For a whole home, add up the rooms and compare the total with a per sq ft quote. |
| Lump sum for the home | ₹50,000 to 5 lakh depending on freelancer skill, home size and scope of work. | What the sum includes: how many drawings, how many rounds of changes and how many site visits. |
| Share of the project | 6 to 15% of what the materials and work cost. On a ₹30 lakh 3BHK, that is ₹1.8 to 4.5 lakh. | The fee rises with every upgrade, so the designer earns more each time you spend more. |
| Consultation only | ₹500 to 2,500 an hour, or ₹25,000 to 50,000 for a basic consultation on a whole home. | Useful for a second opinion on a layout or a quote. No drawings come with it. |

On a 1,200 sq ft 3BHK, ₹50 to 250 per sq ft comes to ₹60,000 to 3 lakh. For comparison, design-led independents charge ₹150 to 250 per sq ft, and the chains don't quote a fee at all, because it sits inside the package price. We go through which square foot the rate should be on, and the fee for each size of home, in interior designer charges per sq ft.
What a freelance interior designer gives you, and what they usually don't
What a freelancer hands over depends on the person more than the title. Two freelancers at the same rate can give you very different work. These are the usual patterns in Bengaluru, and what to ask about each.
None of this makes a freelancer a worse choice. It means more of the job lands on you: finding the contractor, holding them to the drawings and checking the work as it goes up. If you have the time and a contractor you trust, that can save real money. We work out what a hidden margin costs on a ₹30 lakh 3BHK in is an interior designer worth it?
Freelance interior designer, design-led independent or chain?
Besides freelancers, Bengaluru has three kinds of firm: the chains, the luxury studios and the design-led independents. Here is how they compare for a 3BHK.
| Who | Design fee | 3BHK, all in | Who builds | Who answers on site |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Freelancer | ₹50 to 250 per sq ft, often at the low end | The fee, plus the build at your contractor's rates: ₹800 to 2,500+ per sq ft of carpet area | Your contractor, or one the freelancer brings | You and the contractor, with the designer on agreed visits |
| Design-led independent | ₹150 to 250 per sq ft, about ₹2 to 3 lakh for a 3BHK | ₹20 to 30 lakh | A contractor, yours or one the studio suggests | The studio for the design, the contractor for the build |
| Chain | Inside the package price | ₹15 to 40 lakh | The chain's factory and site team | The chain, usually with a warranty on modular work |
| Luxury studio | Priced with the build, as one project | ₹35 lakh and up | The studio's own team | The studio |
Typical Bengaluru rates, mid-2026.
A freelancer often has the lowest fee and gives you the most direct line to the person designing your home. A chain takes the most off your hands, with one company answerable for the build. The chain usually recovers its design through a markup of 10 to 20% on materials and work, which is ₹3 to 6 lakh on a ₹30 lakh 3BHK. Design-led independents sit in between, with a fuller design service at a higher fee and a contractor to build it.
So the choice comes down to how much of the site you can run. If you can give it your weekends and you have a contractor, a good freelancer gets you a designed home for less. If you can't, the money saved on the fee can go on delays and rework. What to check before you hire a freelance interior designer
The same checks apply to a freelancer, a studio or a chain. Get the answers on paper before you pay anything.
- The agreement. The scope (rooms, drawings, rounds of changes, site visits), the payment stages and what each is tied to, a timeline for the drawings, what a change costs once the drawings are done, and who executes. Keep it in one signed document. We go through what an interior design agreement should contain, clause by clause.
- Completed homes you can visit. Ask to see two homes built from the designer's drawings, ideally a year or more after handover. Photos show the design. A visit shows how it was built and how it has held up.
- References. Call two past clients yourself. Ask whether the home matches the 3D views, whether the budget held, and how problems on site were sorted out.
- A sample set of drawings. Ask for the drawings from a past home. If a carpenter could build a wardrobe from them without asking a question, they are complete.
- Margins on materials. Ask whether the fee is the only money the designer makes on your home, and whether you get the product list with brand and code, so you can buy from anyone at their price.
- Who is answerable on site. If the freelancer brings the contractor, ask who you call when a wardrobe arrives the wrong size, and who pays to fix it. If you bring the contractor, agree how many visits the designer makes, and at which stages.

We're a design studio, so we sit with the design-led independents, at a lower fee. We charge ₹100 per sq ft of carpet area for the whole home, which is ₹1.2 lakh for a 1,200 sq ft 3BHK. You pay 50% to book and 50% after you sign off the model, and GST is extra. The fee covers the full drawings and a product list with every item's brand and code. Before anything is bought, you walk your whole home at full scale, on a headset or a big screen at the studio in Whitefield. We take no margin or commission on anything you buy, so you pay the vendor's price. Any contractor can build from our drawings, and our own execution is launching soon. Questions people ask
How much does a freelance interior designer charge?
Most charge for the design alone, within the market range of ₹50 to 250 per sq ft, with less experienced freelancers at the low end. Others charge 6 to 15% of the project cost, a flat fee for the home or a fee per room. On a 1,000 sq ft flat, ₹50 to 250 per sq ft comes to ₹50,000 to 2.5 lakh, before GST and before the build.
How much does an interior designer charge in Bangalore?
For the design alone, ₹50 to 250 per sq ft across the market, 6 to 15% of the project, or a flat ₹50,000 to 5 lakh. Design-led independents charge ₹150 to 250 per sq ft, about ₹2 to 3 lakh for a 3BHK. The chains don't quote a fee: it sits inside the package price, usually as a markup of 10 to 20% on materials and work. Ask for the rate on carpet area.
Is a freelance interior designer cheaper than a firm?
On the fee, usually. A freelancer often charges at the low end of the range, while a firm that builds may recover the design through a markup of 10 to 20%, which is ₹3 to 6 lakh on a ₹30 lakh 3BHK. You take on more yourself, though: finding the contractor, holding them to the drawings and checking the site. If that goes badly, rework can cost more than the fee you saved.
Does a freelance interior designer handle execution?
Some do, by bringing a carpenter or contractor they know. Many design only and work with a contractor you hire. Either way, ask who signs the contract for the build, who you call when something arrives wrong, and how many site visits the designer makes.
Do freelance interior designers give a warranty?
Rarely on the build, because they usually don't build it. Any warranty on the carpentry comes from the contractor, so get it in writing from them. Hardware carries the brand's own warranty. The chains usually give a warranty on their modular work, which is one reason people pay their package price.
How do I find a good freelance interior designer near me?
Start with homes you can see: a friend's flat, a neighbour in your society, or a designer's past work in your area. Then visit two finished homes, call two past clients and ask for a sample set of drawings. A designer close by also finds it easier to make site visits.
What should the agreement with a freelance designer cover?
The scope (rooms, drawings, rounds of changes and site visits), the payment stages and what each is tied to, a timeline for the drawings, what a change costs after the drawings are done, who executes, and whether the designer earns anything on materials or vendors. Keep it in one signed document.
